Bear Canyon Estates hosts Bloom Benefit Dance
Bear Canyon Estates looked more like a dance hall than an independent senior living community Sunday, June 5. The community hosted a Bloom Benefit Dance to support Silver Horizons New Mexico, a local nonprofit helping low-income seniors in the Albuquerque metro area.
An entry fee of at least one item of nonperishable food bought residents and guests a night of entertainment complete with dancing, singing and a few special guests. Some of the nearly 50 attendees included Miss New Mexico 2015 Marissa Livingston, Miss New Mexico Outstanding Teen Sasha Butcher, and Betha Young, Bear Canyon Estates resident and Miss New Mexico 1948. By the time the night ended, attendees had collected dozens of nonperishable food items to send to Silver Horizons New Mexico.
“There were so many heartwarming memories to be had between residents and our guests,” said Erica Costello, enrichment coordinator for Bear Canyon Estates. “Everyone was so happy to be helping others while still having a fantastic time at the dance.”
Highlights of the night included plenty of music, a performance by Miss New Mexico Outstanding Teen Sasha Butcher, and one Bear Canyon Estates’ residents teaching attendees the proper way to do the Charleston dance.
Silver Horizons New Mexico, a staple in the Albuquerque community for more than 35 years, relies on support from the local community to serve more than 10,000 seniors every year. Residents at Bear Canyon Estates are continuing to collect food for the organization, and remain committed to staying connected to organizations in the Albuquerque community.Holiday residents are always staying busy with activities and events like the Bloom Benefit Dance.
