Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Raising funds with Holiday residents
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The international campaign is an annual event designed to raise awareness of the disease, provide information and support to those impacted by breast cancer, and, finally, to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.
Holiday Retirement’s Grasslands Estates in Wichita, Kansas, has a number of plans in place to help spread awareness. Enrichment coordinator Francie Hauck says the National Breast Cancer Foundation — which will receive a donation from the senior living community’s fundraising efforts — has been indispensable in the preparation, having provided informational booklets as a resource as well as ribbons for the breast cancer survivors living at Grasslands Estates.
Residents will start seeing signs of the community involvement in Breast Cancer Awareness early in October, as a sideboard in the dining room will get a top-to-bottom makeover in solid pink. The team will also be setting out pink mason jars featuring the names of staff members willing to take a pie to the face in the name of the cause. Residents, visitors and staff members will have the opportunity to contribute money to the volunteer they most want to see get “pied.” If you’re in the area, donations will be collected through Oct. 12, 2017.
Come that day; the whole dining room will be decorated with pink accoutrements. The community team members will tally up the donations, announce the total money raised and reveal the lucky winner. The winner, as decided by the donors, will get up close and personal with a pink whipped cream pie that same day, while residents will be encouraged to get in on the action by wearing pink for the occasion.
Take this opportunity to talk to your friends and loved ones about breast cancer risk, awareness and detection. If you’re not sure where to start, visit the National Breast Cancer Foundation website for educational resources — and opportunities to take action.
