Maple Suites seniors serve society through popular food drives
From actions big to small, Holiday Retirement residents across the country strive to make a difference in their communities year-round. One of residents’ favorite volunteer activities is hosting nonperishable food drives known as Holiday Hunger Aid.
While food drives are popular around the holiday season, resulting in an abundance of food for food banks in November and December, it’s well-known that food banks often face depleted resources during the summer months. Holiday residents are committed to helping fill that gap, uniting with friends, family and their local community to assist those in need.
For example, residents of Holiday Retirement’s Maple Suites have participated in the national Stamp Out Hunger campaign for the last three years. Stamp Out Hunger is the largest one-day food drive in the nation and occurs every second Saturday in May, when letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America collect nonperishable food donations left by mailboxes and in post offices, delivering them to local community food banks, pantries and shelters.
For this specific drive, Maple Suites residents set up a large donation bin in the independent senior living community’s atrium for just more than a week. Each day, the contents doubled thanks to contributions from residents, family members and visitors. When it came time for Maple Suites’ mail carrier to collect their donated items, he struggled to lift two giant bags brimming with nonperishable food donations.
Maple Suites enrichment coordinator, Monique Foote, said she couldn’t be prouder of her community service–-minded residents, “this is only one of three food drives that we hold each year at Maple Suites. The amount of items donated always astounds me; and it’s a testament to the generosity of our community’s residents, family and friends.”
Maple Suites’ efforts, along with Holiday Retirement communities around the country, are part of Holiday’s award-winning volunteer program, Seniors Serving Seniors and Society (SSS). This program engages residents by providing opportunities to give back to their communities and enrich the lives of others.
