Sheldon Oaks residents adopt a platoon
Many of the residents at Sheldon Oaks in Eugene, Oregon, are veterans or spouses of veterans, and deeply value what today’s soldiers are doing day-in and day-out. And that is why so many residents were excited to be a part of the community’s initiative to Adopt a Platoon.
What started as a simple initiative to send one care package to each of the four soldiers Sheldon Oaks adopted quickly multiplied, and thanks to these seniors and the Eugene community, each adopted soldier will receive three or four care packages each.
Sheldon Oaks residents and the Eugene community have spent the better half of the summer compiling donations for their adopted soldiers. Everything from cookies and treats, to crossword puzzles and personal hygiene items, made it into the final 10 packages that are being sent to soldiers stationed abroad.
“It would be kind of hard to overemphasize how important it is to get something from home; even from people that you don’t know,” said Jim M., veteran and Sheldon Oaks resident.
