Sierra Hills residents give advice to their younger selves
If you could go back in time and give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be? The residents of Sierra Hills in Porterville, California, took turns answering that question, and their answers may surprise you.
The opportunity came from a former Sierra Hills dining room server, Pablo Valdivia. He was visiting Porterville when he decided to stop by the senior living community to see old friends and colleagues. Now a writer for Buzzfeed, Pablo asked residents what advice they would give themselves if they could go back in time. He published their responses on the popular news and entertainment website.
Jan Kyle, enrichment coordinator for Sierra Hills, said the fun exercise brought joy to the current residents: “They truly enjoyed writing down the advice and sharing it with the other residents.”
Fifteen senior residents participated in the project, choosing advice they would give themselves if they knew then what they know now.
Verla E., a Sierra Hills resident, advised herself about marriage. She wrote, “People should know who they are before taking on such a life-altering commitment.” Verla also advised her younger self to find the “good in the ugly.”
Education was also very popular. Many residents, now understanding the value of education, stressed the importance of staying in school. One resident wrote, “Be sure you get your education, so you can get a good job and take care of yourself.”
