Simi Hills residents spread holiday cheer with gifts for women and children in need
The Sunshine Committee of Holiday Retirement at Simi Hills lived up to its name this past December by showering local families in need with gifts just in time for Christmas. The group, which is made up of seven residents of the Simi Valley, California, retirement community, organized this act of kindness that will not soon be forgotten.

Sunshine Committee members sprang into action with the Adopt-a-Family Program through the Coalition for Family Harmony, a battered women’s shelter in the area. The residents, ranging in age from 78 to 90, made “wish ornaments” to put on the Simi Hills’ Christmas tree. These ornaments reflected specific items desired by these deserving families. Residents and staff chose an ornament and purchased the corresponding gifts—making the fundraising a truly community-wide event.
“The residents did it out of their own hearts,” said Cynthia O’Neil, enrichment coordinator for Simi Hills. “It was so great to see the whole community come together for such a worthwhile cause.”
The overwhelming response led to more than 70 gifts and $600 in cash collected for the shelter, just in time to hand deliver gifts for Christmas. One child received a keyboard piano, another roller skates and yet another unwrapped the set of Pokémon cards he had wanted for so long.
While the Sunshine Committee enjoyed contributing this holiday season, committee members say they are just getting started. They can’t wait to show us what they have in store for the Simi Valley area in 2017.
