Vineyard Commons residents knit teddy bears for local youth charity
Knitting is a beloved pastime for residents at Vineyard Commons, an independent senior living community in Santa Rosa, California. When residents decided to couple their passion for knitting with their dedication to the local Santa Rosa community, the result was truly heartwarming.
After several months of hand knitting plush teddy bears, a handful of residents, who are also members of the retirement community’s knitting group, went on an outing to the Valley of the Moon Children’s Home. On May 7, the ladies personally donated the more than 60 teddy bears to the babies, toddlers, and children.
The Valley of the Moon Children’s Home is a private, nonprofit organization established to provide supportive and educational services for the abandoned, neglected, and abused children of Sonoma County. Sugar Carlton and Kathryn Gary have shared their knitting skills with the children at Valley of the Moon for years, with knitted blankets, hats, etc., and teddy bears seemed like a great activity to try with the knitting group and brighten a child’s day.
Activities like this one at Vineyard Commons help support Seniors Serving Seniors and Society, a volunteer program through Holiday Retirement that helps to engage residents by providing opportunities to enrich the lives of others and enhance the purpose and passion in their own lives.
