Vineyard Place throws big surprise for centenarian resident
In her 100 years on this planet, Helen Strain has been no stranger to incredible experiences. Indeed, she’s made exceptional progress on her bucket list, but there are still a few elusive items she’s yet to cross off, such as taking an Alaskan cruise.
In honor of her 100th birthday, her friends and neighbors at Holiday Retirement’s Vineyard Place helped her get a little bit closer to one of those elusive list items with an Alaskan-cruise-themed celebration.
Lanelle Veile, enrichment coordinator for Vineyard Place, came up with the theme for the centenarian’s celebration.
“After learning Helen had always wanted to go on a cruise, but she no longer was physically able to travel, I knew what the party’s theme had to be,” Lanelle said. “I just wanted to make sure she had loved ones there and that it was a total surprise.”
Happily, Lanelle was able to achieve both of those goals, thanks to help from the Vineyard Place community management team and Helen’s friends and family. Helen was completely shocked by the birthday party, which included visits from numerous family and friends on top of the special theme.
Helen and her guests set sail on their handcrafted Alaskan cruise right from the comfort of Vineyard Place! Whale balloons, white tablecloths, blue napkins and silverware tied with rope brought the entire theme together. And when it came time for Helen to blow out all 100 of her candles, she did so with a cruise-themed cake and live music playing in the background.
In addition to family and friends, two fellow Vineyard Place centenarians joined the celebration to welcome Helen to their elite club. And, after a celebration to remember, Helen has one more adventure to cherish.
