Holiday Retirement centenarian celebrates with 1917-themed party
The movies were silent. Woodrow Wilson was president. The United States was a new entrant in World War I. This was 1917. It was the world into which Theo Roberts was born.
Now, a century later, she was treated to a centenarian celebration designed to recall the year of her birth. The soiree, which took place at Holiday Retirement’s Standiford Place, where Theo is a resident, was highlighted by live music and visits from family members who traveled from all around the country to join the celebration.
Theo and her three siblings grew up in Minnesota, under the watchful eyes of her mother and father, a banker who would go on to own a hardware store. Later, in December 1935, Theo met Woody, the man who would become her husband, and they married the following year. The pair had two beautiful daughters, an extension of the family that already played such an important role in Theo’s life.
Knowing how much her family means to her, Theo’s friends and neighbors at Standiford Place made sure the family presence was strong at her celebration. In addition to family from Washington state and San Diego coming in for the event, the community was able to pull in another special surprise.
“We had Theo’s great-grandson send in a video via email from Iowa,” explained Laurie Warren, enrichment coordinator for Standiford Place. “It was priceless to watch her reaction!”
To further the festive atmosphere, Standiford Place was decorated to fit the era, with everything from 1917-themed placemats to a large poster detailing all the major events that happened that year. Meanwhile, a live band filled the community with uplifting music, as all of the guests enjoyed cake and ice cream.
“Theo was so thankful for her party and we feel so lucky to have such an amazing woman in our community,” Laurie said. “The party was the least that we could do for her.”
For her part, the woman of the hour shared her advice for a long, healthy life — and it’s simpler than you might imagine: enjoy every day and understand that the best experiences in life will always outweigh the very worst.
Those words of wisdom remind us that this birthday is not only an incredible landmark, but also an opportunity to appreciate the incredible history and vast change Theo has seen unfold. But, as the adage goes, as much as things change they stay the same, and Holiday Retirement residents like Theo will always be timeless treasures.
