Albuquerque, the largest city in New Mexico, sits to the east of the beautiful Sandia Mountains and has the Rio Grande running through the middle of the city. The city was originally a Spanish colonial outpost and still retains much of its history culture—just visit Old Town Albuquerque which has been preserved to reflect its origins.
History enthusiasts will have plenty of things to do in Albuquerque. Spend time at the Albuquerque Biological Park, Albuquerque Museum of Art and History and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science. Or go way back into the past and enjoy the many ghost tours in Old Town.
If you’re interested in a warm and arid climate, Albuquerque is the place to be. Summers are hot and winters are mild with little snow.
The Sandia and Manzano Mountains to the east of the city offer the opportunity to experience the unique trails and campsites of New Mexico. For a more relaxed view of this area, take the Sandia Peak Tramway which boasts the third-longest single span in the world. Get an amazing view of the mountain ranges, passing close to dramatic cliffs and pinnacles.
Movie buffs may recognize the city from such movies and television shows as Little Miss Sunshine, Breaking Bad and High School Musical. It has also been the subject of songs by Neil Young and The Partridge Family. Perhaps most memorable is the Bugs Bunny quote, “I knew I should have taken that left turn at Albuquerque.”
Whatever brings you to Albuquerque, be sure to visit Holiday Retirement’s community Bear Canyon Estates.
