2 Bus Drivers Explain Why They Adore Working with Seniors
Holiday Retirement communities are staffed by compassionate individuals who love the work they do. Ask anyone, from managers to maintenance team members (and everyone in between), what the best part of their work is, and you’ll hear one answer time and again: the residents.
We caught up with a few dedicated senior living community bus drivers to get their perspective on the benefits of working with seniors.
Tom McCollim has served as a bus driver at Holiday Retirement’s Harvard Park for three years, and he’s found it’s a job that never knows a shortage of residents with interesting lives to share.
"I love my people. They are a family extension for me. I worry about them all. I love hearing their stories. I have people who were electricians, newspaper editors, politicians, teachers, people who have worked in embassies,“ Tom said. And every one of those residents has a lifetime of stories to share. “Makes it fun coming to work every day,” he added.
And for those trips that go beyond the routine, Tom goes the extra mile.
“I work with the enrichment coordinator to do the tours too. I use a microphone to point out interesting stops on our way and make sure to research facts beforehand,” he explained. “I want to make their days great every time they see me."
Sue Ballard has worked at Holiday Retirement’s Lakeshore Estates for nearly 15 years. She’s worn a lot of different hats during her time at the Waco, Texas, retirement community, but after trying her hand in roles ranging from housekeeping to enrichment coordinator, she found an extra dose of joy as the community’s bus driver.
“I started driving the bus when I was an enrichment coordinator and I really liked it. I like planning my routes and getting the residents where they need to go,” Sue explained. “It might sound so simple to say, ‘I’m a bus driver,’ but it’s very important to the residents. It’s important to the residents’ families too. I like giving to the families as much as the residents. I like them to know I’m taking good care of their parents. I like paying it forward.”
Sue added that working so closely with the residents has always been a highlight of her career with Holiday Retirement. “They’ve lived such interesting lives that we can’t even imagine. I love hearing their stories.”
