Hairstylists share what inspires them to work with Holiday Retirement
When you live at Holiday Retirement, a new look or a simple wash and style is just around the corner… literally. Many of our communities come equipped with salons to keep residents looking and feeling their best. But there’s something far more important than the facilities — the talented hairstylists who never fail to arrive to packed schedules and eager clients.
In many cases, stylists work at our communities on a part-time basis, taking time away from thriving salons and businesses to share their talents with our residents at reduced rates. We caught up with a few of these generous folks to hear why their work at Holiday Retirement is rewarding.
After 48-years in the industry, Dale Henning is a master hairstylist. She owns and operates Superior Hair Designs, but makes time in her busy schedule to service the residents at Holiday Retirement’s The Virginian
in Richmond ㄧ something she says never fails to breathe a breath of fresh air into her routine.
Her days at The Virginian are so full that she filled us in on her work while she was mid-shampoo. “It’s a beautiful place with beautiful residents,” she said. “I get very attached to them — it makes me feel good to help them feel good.”
Dale has worked with the residents at The Virginian for eight years and says a visit to the salon always has a positive outcome for her clients. “It brightens them up and lifts their spirits. It’s always a complete transformation from when they walk in to see me to when they walk out. I love coming here.”
Like Dale, Gloria Cruz is an experienced stylist with a business of her own, Gloria’s Cutting Edge. Gloria has been in the business for 32-years and operated her own business for 28-years. She’s a part-time presence at Holiday Retirement’s Ventura Place
in Lubbock, but her days at the community are full, full, full! When we first spoke with Gloria, she was also mid-shampoo, but true to form, she found time to make it work.
After four years at Ventura Place, Gloria has plenty of regular customers, and at this point, the residents are closer to family than to clients. “I don’t have a lot of relatives in the area, and I really do think of the residents as my aunts, uncles and grandparents,” she said. “Every week when I come in, we catch up.”
Gloria fell in love with working with seniors after working at a local orthopedic rehabilitation center and jumped at the opportunity to join Ventura Place. “I absolutely fell in love with it, you get to know the people so well and soak in all of that wisdom,” she said. Recently, Gloria styled the bridal party for a 75th-anniversary celebration slash wedding re-do
for residents Tom and Marie. “It was beautiful; they really went all out. I didn’t get to stay for the whole thing, but I’m really glad I got to be a part of it.”
We’re grateful to stylists like Dale and Gloria for dedicating their talents and kindness to keep residents everywhere looking amazing.
