Holiday Retirement team members join in on the football season fun
Recent years have seen football proclaimed as America’s national pastime, with a commanding 67 percent of poll respondents citing the gridiron over the baseball diamond. But whatever your favorite sport (we love baseball too!) or favorite team, it’s impossible to deny the passion football inspires in its fans. Whether it’s devotion to a college team or support for a franchise on the grand stage of the NFL, football fans bring the enthusiasm all season long.
For the team members and residents at Holiday Retirement’s Bluebird Estates in East Longmeadow, Mass., cheering the New England Patriots became a communitywide effort that culminated in a Super Bowl watch party to support the team’s bid for the championship. The team’s schedule had been posted all year long so staff and residents alike could share the football season together. But when the Patriots made it to the big game, they redoubled their efforts.
Team members Chris Prince and Mia Sgueglia, who both work in the kitchen, didn’t stop at helping set up the party; they helped spread the excitement and enthusiasm as fans in their own right. The community’s head chef was out at the time, and both Chris and Mia stepped up to make sure the residents had a Super Bowl–worthy space and the spread to match it. And, of course, the big game returned a very happy ending for the community, so it’s a sure thing the tradition of cheering on the home team will be back stronger than ever this season.
The even-better news for the team at Bluebird Estates and fans in our communities around the country? Studies have shown that being a sports fan comes with health and happiness benefits. Daniel Wann, a sports psychology professor at Murray State University, reports that his research links fandom to improved well-being and general happiness with one’s social life. And that’s not to mention the decreases in loneliness and alienation. In short, he told the Huffington Post, it all boils down “to how community lifts our spirits.”
At Holiday Retirement, we’re big believers in the power of community. And while supporting the home team is a part of that, it’s not nearly the whole story. We offer a vibrant array of events and activities ranging from purely social to vocational and emotional—explore our event calendar and see what catches your eye.
