Holiday Retirement team members share advice for caregivers
It goes without saying that we all want to support our loved ones, wherever they may be. When mom or dad moves to a senior living community, a whole world of new opportunities to show how much you care opens up. While spending time together or going out for a nice meal is always a lovely option, we asked some Holiday Retirement team members to share their best suggestions, and some of them might surprise you.
Elaine Elbert, enrichment coordinator at Holiday Retirement’s Hunters Pointe, says she’s found one method that seems to work for every family over her years of experience. “I’ve found it very helpful to give activity calendars to the family members on the resident’s list.”
“It helps to let families know when they should plan to come for a visit,” Elaine explained. “I always encourage families to pick activities and visit a couple times a month.” The activity built into the visit helps families to bond over a shared experience and make new memories together.
Jackie Sadosky, enrichment coordinator at Holiday Retirement’s Dogwood Terrace, agrees that activities are a sure path to a lot of fun for all involved. But Jackie has a favorite that she recommends to all community visitors, Balloon Volleyball. Whether it’s family members, residents or team members, Jackie says Balloon Volleyball “creates a relaxed, fun atmosphere, where, for a moment in time, the players can let go of the cares of the day and laugh!” Jackie says the game creates a contagious laughter and a healthy energy that people always want to relive again and again.
And for those caregivers who, from time to time, feel they aren’t doing enough? Jackie has a simple bit of advice. Breath. Take extra breaths if necessary. The best thing you can be for your loved one is an active listener. We all feel more supported when friends and family tune into our needs and that wisdom holds true at every age.
If you have an aging loved one who is considering senior living, stop into a community near you to see what life at Holiday Retirement is like. You might even catch a rousing game of Balloon Volleyball when you do!
