Giving back: Holiday Retirement communities get in the spirit of the season
Volunteerism and giving back are both proud traditions in Holiday Retirement communities. Our residents and staff devote time and energy to causes they believe in throughout the year, but there’s always extra enthusiasm for special projects during the holiday season.
We caught up with several communities to hear what they’ll be up to this winter.
Residents and employees at Holiday Retirement’s Astor House at Springbrook Oaks found a couple of ways to make a difference this season. The community filled shoeboxes for the popular Operation Christmas Child effort with Samaritan’s Purse. Each shoebox is filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items for a child in need — shoeboxes are shipped around the world and participants can use an online tracking tool to see where their box ended up. The residents at Astor House wanted to ensure they would have a local impact as well as a global one, so the retirement community also came together to donate to the fire department’s toy and food drive in their hometown of Newberg, Oregon.
Holiday Retirement’s Niagara Village once again partnered with Mercy Center to do an Angel Tree. The Erie, Pennsylvania, senior living community has worked with Mercy Center for past events and was thrilled to do so again this year. The tree was placed in the atrium of Niagara Village and adorned with ornaments detailing the interests and likes of a woman or child in need. Participating residents and staff members were able to select an ornament, purchase a gift and return the gift to the tree to await delivery to the intended recipient.
Meanwhile, the residents at Holiday Retirement’s The Bentley decided to try a new program this year. Residents and staff began working to support the WindSong Movement, an organization dedicated to helping homeless and impoverished youth living in Dallas-area shelters. Senior living community residents and staff started staffing a soup kitchen in November and will continue their efforts throughout December.
We hope to follow the lead of these and many other Holiday Retirement communities spreading cheer around the world. Happy holidays from our family to yours!
