Grandparents Day celebrations: photos, cookies and magic, oh my!
Sept. 10, 2017, is Grandparents Day and Holiday Retirement communities around the country are planning fun-filled celebrations to mark the occasion.
Residents of Holiday Retirement’s Dogwood Terrace in Richmond, Virginia, will enjoy a sprawling carnival-themed celebration with both indoor and outdoor attractions, as long as the weather holds up. Jackie Sadosky, enrichment coordinator for the senior living community, and her team have organized entertainment ranging from a shaved ice truck to a close-up magician to bring extra joy to the cross-generational holiday.
Dogwood Terrace saw a massive turnout last year, and Jackie is looking to make 2017 just as memorable. In addition to the carnival fare and foods—the dining team is working on a special menu—the event will feature face painting and a cookie-decorating station where grandparents and grandchildren can design culinary masterpieces together.
Dogwood Terrace isn’t alone in creating a festive environment to pass the day. Holiday Retirement’s Birch Heights in Derry, New Hampshire, is preparing to welcome residents’ families with an array of tasty treats and fun activities. Birch Heights will also encourage grandparents and grandchildren to get creative together by transforming their activity room into a decorating zone for baked goods.
The plans for the day also include a special luncheon and a professional photo shoot. Pictures from the photo session will be framed and given to the families of the Birch Heights residents to commemorate the special day.
Meanwhile, Holiday Retirement’s Kittery Estates in Kittery, Maine, will mark the occasion with music and a special meal. All residents have been encouraged to invite grandchildren and great-grandchildren to join them for a fun-filled afternoon.
Lunch will not only feature a festive menu but special decor as well. Later in the day, The Sweet Chickadees will perform for the residents and their families. This trio of ladies has a special connection, as one of their members is the daughter of former Kittery Estates residents. All residents will also receive greeting cards to commemorate the day.
