How art benefits Holiday Retirement residents and communities alike
The benefits of art extend far beyond aesthetics. It’s a well-documented fact that creating art can help relieve stress, boost self-esteem and increase brain connectivity and plasticity. But did you know that simply viewing art has a powerful impact as well?
It’s been shown that students who visit art museums display increased critical thinking skills, empathy and tolerance—and if it works for them, why shouldn’t it benefit the rest of us too? Perhaps even more fascinating is research that demonstrated that looking at art stimulates the same portion of the brain as the act of falling in love.
So it follows that putting ourselves in the way of beauty every now and then is a great idea for a number of reasons. Many Holiday Retirement communities offer art classes for a bit of fun and self-expression. Walk through the halls of some of our senior living communities and you’ll happen upon custom murals. For many, a mural proves a great way to add an extra special touch to the Wall of Honor that celebrates veterans in every community.
At Holiday Retirement’s Village Gate in Farmington, Conn., it was resident Joan Hartley’s granddaughter who gave the Wall of Honor that extra something special. The scene on the wall features the star-spangled banner waving proudly over a grassy knoll, set against a backdrop of mountains and shore. On the opposite side of the mural, a soldier in uniform salutes the flag.
Holiday Retirement’s Standiford Place in Modesto, Calif, is across the country, but has also enhanced its Wall of Honor with a floor-to-ceiling flag painting. Former resident Greg Hoyle contributed the artwork to the Wall of Honor, and brought an extra pop of color to the community’s foyer with a garden scene mural.
Just as each of these artists lent their own special touch to the walls, each Holiday Retirement community has its own special identity, but all share a deep dedication to creating happy, welcoming environments for our residents and team members.
