Our most popular Resident Spotlight stories from 2017
As 2017 draws to a close, we’re taking a bit of time to look back at some of the stories we’ve shared this year. These five stories capture a snapshot of very interesting lives and experiences, and we’re proud to be a common thread between them — they’re all Holiday Retirement residents.
Dr. John Kline, a resident of Holiday Retirement’s Windlands East and Harlem Globetrotters legend, is on a mission to preserve the history and culture of African American basketball. But his legacy doesn’t stop there; he’s also found time to work in substance abuse research and publish 15 books!
John Stoutjesdyk and Phyllis Thwaites met at Holiday Retirement’s Aurora Pond nearly three years ago. They couldn’t have known it then, but their first meal together was only the beginning of a heartwarming love story.
Joe Hargrove, a 91-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, was treated to the ride of his life earlier this year. Joe took an Honor Flight from his home at Holiday Retirement’s Jackson Oaks in Paducah, Kentucky, to Washington, D.C., where he was able to visit the National World War II Memorial, among other sights!
Betty Douglas, a resident at Holiday Retirement’s Tallgrass Estates, knitted more than 150 hats as part of an effort to keep her neighbors warm. She donated the hats to the local branch of the Salvation Army. Why? Betty says the reason is simple, “I’ve always loved knitting for my friends and family, but I’ve never had an occasion to knit for others.”
Mary and Dean Jones, both residents of Holiday Retirement’s Madison Meadows, were the toast of the community when it came time to celebrate a landmark. Earlier this year, we shared the story of that event, their platinum anniversary — that’s 70 years of love and devotion.
Thank you to our residents for being part of the Holiday Retirement family. We can’t wait to spend 2018 with you!
