Fun, Fur and Tails are On Trend at Pet Fashion Show
Tails, fur and shells were on trend at one of the year’s hottest fashion shows in Yucaipa, California. Or at least they were the must-haves at the annual Holiday Retirement’s Golden Oaks Pet Fashion Show, held in early June.
For the second year in a row, residents decked out their animal friends in fashionable outfits for fun and folly. The event took place on the afternoon of the community’s Pet Appreciation Day, a day to celebrate the furry, scaly and feathery friends of residents.
Each year, residents showcase their animals in a parade around the community’s atrium. It’s an event full of joy and smiles and a little barking, too! Residents with pets take turns walking their costumed-companions, while their neighbors vote by applause -- loudest wins!
This year, there were goldendoodles, Maltese mixes and dachshunds aplenty, but the definitive winner was Fynn, a turtle who donned a fiercely fashionable pink and white bow. For people who live outside of
Golden Oaks, a turtle winning a fashion show might be a surprise. But anyone who knows Fynn and his owner, Lu Chaffin, understands the draw of this diapsid.
Lu has lived at Golden Oaks for eight years. A couple of years after she moved in, she adopted Fynn. Like many residents, Lu knows that owning a pet can be beneficial for seniors. In fact, keeping an animal companion has such a positive impact, most Holiday Retirement communities allow residents to have pets.
At Golden Oaks, many of the residents have come to know and love Fynn. He can often be seen roaming the backyard with Lu. The affection people have for Fynn extends to the other animals in the community, too!
The fashion show and Pet Appreciation Day grew out of this collective fondness for companionable creatures. It is an easy way for pet owners - and non-owners alike - to share their love for animals. And, it has turned into quite a community event! In addition to making sure each fashion show participant gets a trophy, all the animals receive a treat made by resident volunteers in the Golden Oaks community!
The fashion show is just the kind of activity that captures the warmth, kindness and fun that can be found at all Holiday Retirement communities. Because when people come to live at Holiday Retirement, they - and their pets - are truly joining a family.
