White Elephants and Live Reindeer: Some of our Favorite Seasonal Anecdotes
‘Tis the season for memories! Along with the decorations, songs and treats that help make the holidays special, there are always a few favorite stories that get told over and over again. They’re a big part of our seasonal traditions.
You probably have some stories of your own. Whether it’s the time “Santa” couldn’t figure out how to put your toy castle together or the year your cat decided to climb the town’s Christmas tree, holiday memories bring us together. And the same magic happens at Holiday Retirement communities everywhere. Our residents love to share favorite holiday anecdotes that are filled with the warmth of home.
Some of these stories revolve around the seasonal classics our Holiday communities enjoy year after year. Residents love to share anecdotes as they come together to deck the halls and sing sweet old carols. From cookies and hot cocoa to turkey with all the fixings, our chefs pull out all the stops to make memorable holiday meals. And year after year, hearts open to share the season’s joys with those in hospitals, shelters and the armed forces.
But residents also cherish holiday traditions that are a bit quirkier. At Holiday Retirement’s The Cambridge, residents love to share giggles as they celebrate their annual white elephant gift exchange. Stories are retold about the funniest, most surprising and silliest gifts exchanged in years past. It truly is the thought that counts when some of these presents are unwrapped!
And then there are those once-in-a-lifetime events that become traditions in the retelling. The holidays at Holiday Retirement’s The Lodge at White Bear Lake just wouldn’t be the same without the story of the time Santa and his reindeer visited for an outdoor meet and greet with community members. It was so windy and cold that day that someone suggested bringing Mr. Claus and two of his live deer into the residence’s atrium. What could possibly go wrong?
Well, the reindeer were happy to come inside. They posed for photos and got lots of nose rubs. And then one of them made himself just a bit too comfortable — turning the indoors into his outhouse. Luckily the rug wasn’t damaged! And the year of the reindeer will be retold for many years to come, adding more merriment to the holidays at The Lodge at White Bear Lake.
As Jennifer Sabin, the community’s resident enrichment coordinator, says, “At Holiday Retirement, we love to have fun, share the energy and enjoy the magic of the season – even when it’s unexpected!” And we know that’s the spirit that creates the best holiday traditions in any home!
