From Team Member to Resident, Adele Johnston's Holiday Retirement Story
If you happen to visit us in Vancouver, Washington, you might get to meet Adele Johnston, who has been a part of Holiday Retirement’s Kamlu Retirement Inn for – wait for it! – 33 years. Sit down with her over a meal or a cup of coffee and you just might hear about some of the warm friendships she’s built here on her journey from team member to resident.
Adele’s stories about Kamlu begin in 1985, when she started working there as a housekeeper. Coming from a family of nine kids (she was the only girl!) and with five children of her own, she knew she’d be happy working in a busy community with lots of different personalities.
Over the years, Adele took on a number of roles at Kamlu, including night manager, receptionist and resident assistant. Her last official position, as part of Kamlu’s community marketing team, let her showcase her many years with the community and share the social and physical benefits she had seen in residents she’d known over the years.
Adele kept busy in retirement with family and volunteer activities and got a chance to do some foreign travel. But eventually, she realized that she missed the friendly social life, full schedule and warm care that came so easily at the place she’d called her home away from home for so long.
So in 2011, the long-time Holiday team member moved back to Kamlu to become a happy Holiday resident. “Of course, a lot has changed since 1985,” says Adele. “But what hasn’t changed is the friendly atmosphere you feel when you walk in here.”
And Adele makes sure she contributes to that friendly feeling. “I really enjoy visiting with other residents and welcoming visitors to Kamlu,” she says. “It means so much to me to have all these connections to other people.”
Whether our residents are new to Holiday or have been part of our community for decades, we know those connections come more easily in a place where everyone feels welcome – that’s what home’s all about!
