Nestled among the trees, this independent senior living community offers a gorgeous retreat setting close enough to Portland’s Back Bay to smell the sea. The retirement community is located next to Canco Woods, an urban forest that not only provides crucial habitat for wildlife, but provides residents with a peaceful outdoor oasis.

Well-known for its lobsters and lighthouses, Portland is a charming city that offers more than just seafood and sea shanties. Take a walk through Old Port, a historic district known for its 19th century buildings, cobblestone streets, restaurants and shops. Enjoy a performance of the Portland Symphony. Visit the Portland Museum of Art and see works by Renoir, Winslow Homer and Mary Cassat. When you live in The Woods at Canco, it's all yours to discover.

Keeping You Informed

Our commitment to helping older people live better means sharing important and timely information to help you make an informed decision to live in a Holiday community. The Woods at Canco operates with extensive protocols that mitigate the spreading of COVID-19.  If a resident tests positive for COVID-19, we notify residents and their designated contacts, our employees, and the local health department. In addition, the number of active cases is shared here. We are so proud of our team’s efforts and hard work to protect our community. See here for more information on our prevention and response measures.

What are your interests?

Beauty Care Needs Met On-Site

The convenience of The Woods at Canco's on-site beauty salon and barber means all you have to do is walk in to get your hair and nails done. Of course, appointments are available.

Outside community members may visit the beauty salon and we also have a foot care nurse that residents and outside community members visit. Our residents also enjoy monthly visits from "The Spa Sistas" for facials, hand and foot treatments.

Fitness Right at Home

The Woods at Canco residents enjoy a variety of health and fitness activities, from weekly group exercise classes to anytime access to on-site fitness equipment

The community has a walking club and trail walking club led by a trail expert resident. In addition, residents can take classes on pound exercise drumming, laughter yoga, tai chi, balance fitness and balloon tennis. The Woods at Canco fuses fun with fitness in engaging, lighthearted classes. To strengthen the mind, there is a meditation and relaxation group.

Let Us Serve You

Enjoy restaurant-style dining served with courtesy and caring by our staff who know you. Chef-prepared meals are served every day in The Woods at Canco's dining room. Sit with friends or invite your family for special occasions in our private dining room. Each meal is designed to meet the unique nutritional needs of community members.

At The Woods at Canco, our chef is always open to suggestions and is happy to make dishes based on resident requests.

Make Memories Exploring the Surrounding Community

There's so much to explore and The Woods at Canco makes sure residents experience as much as possible. Regular outings to favorite restaurants, local events and more introduce residents to all their neighborhood as to offer.

We travel to local breweries, enjoy history tours, as well as resident-led history/scenic tours, boat cruises, casinos, local plays and kindness outings to name a few. We also go to restaurants as requested by residents.

Life is Never Boring

The Woods at Canco's comprehensive calendar is packed with both recurring activities and special events. The variety of available activities is meant to enrich the whole person by stimulating physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, creative, social or vocational wellness.

Sing-alongs happen every month and happy hours every week. In addition, our community hosts "coffee with a cop," a knitting club that knits for charity, book and Bible study club and more. We recently held a health fair with a Wizard of Oz theme, threw an Area 51 party, enjoyed fire dancers, pinatas, mascots and more.

Pets Make Life Better

Furry friends are welcomed as residents at The Woods at Canco. We understand the importance of the companionship and bond that seniors share with their pets. We’re delighted to have cats, dogs, birds and even bunnies as part of our community.

Our residents enjoy visits from therapy animals. Our community warmly embraces all pets. Here, dogs are known by name and folks will bring treats and gifts to a resident's pet.

Stay Connected with Technology and Wifi

The Woods at Canco residents enjoy WiFi access throughout the entire building, as well as desktop computers for resident use, viewfinders, Wii and Alexa.

Rather than pushing new technology onto our residents, we show them how little pieces of technology can make their life easier. The Table Squad sits one-on-one with residents to address technology needs. We also have a TEDTalks program, and show them how to use Youtube videos to make crafts and DIYs, and Pinterest to discover new ways to decorate.

Travel and Adventure is Always Available

The exclusive Travel & Stay program offers residents exciting opportunities to travel around the country, with free stays of up to seven days at any of Holiday Retirement's more than 260 communities. Three chef-prepared meals are included with each trip. Visit all 43 states or just choose a favorite new location or two.

The Woods at Canco operates its own travel program that lets residents get a taste of faraway countries. Once a month, residents can enjoy a themed happy hour with music, food and presentations related to a new country. They also get a stamp in their community passport.

Lend a Helping Hand

The Woods at Canco holds fundraisers for nonprofits every other month, plus donation drives and visits from Girl Scouts. We hold the record for Portland's longest banana split, as part of a fundraiser for Camp Sunshine. We volunteer with the United Way to read to school children and have supported: the Center for Grieving Children, Preble Street, Maine Breast Cancer Coalition, The Dempsey Center, Toys for Tots, Through These Doors, Red Cross, Special Olympics, Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland and Be a Santa for a Senior. We volunteer with elementary school children to help them read.
