5 ways to bond with your family this autumn
We can always count upon the fall to greet us with crisp air and fresh school supplies in every store. It’s a time packed with traditions, holidays and festive flavors. Make the most of autumn this year with accessible activities that bring the family together and are fun at every age.
Indulge in seasonal eats and treats.
Autumn arguably affords more seasonal flavors than any other season — from the final fresh fruit of the year to hearty vegetables and savory seasonings, the smack of changing leaves and cooler temperatures, fall has something for every palate. Try getting your family together for a seasonal-themed potluck — and if you want to make it really interesting, call for all new recipes to break out of the norm. Need a few ideas to get started? The fall promises us the last riot of color before winter sets in, so make the most of it this season. Grab a group and check out a local farmers market early in the season and a corn maze or pumpkin patch later in the season. Or, take a day trip to do some leaf peeping — check out local sites before you head out to learn about trail difficulty and accessibility, or even pinpoint places where a view from the car will be dazzling in its own right.
Learn something new.
Autumn is synonymous with back to school, but even if everyone in your family has graduated, it’s never too late to pick up a new skill. Find a fun class at a local community center or even online and learn something new as a family. It could be something more in depth, like a new language, or as light-hearted as a one-time improv class. The real value here is in the shared experience of trying something totally new with your family.
Embrace the art of conversation.
In our technology-driven world, the art of conversation can, at times, get lost in the shuffle. Take some time together — perhaps sitting around a cozy fire — and just chat. Pick a handful of topics and ask each other questions. From a favorite movie, song or book, to the historical figure someone would most like to meet or a recollection of a typical day; there’s no telling what might unlock an incredible story or memory. If you want to have some conversation starters handy, consider picking up a pack of Table Topics cards. The Family Gathering and Past Present Future bundles are great options for families. Unplug for a bit and enjoy.
Make the world a better place.
Find a cause that means something to you, and invite your family along for a bit of volunteering. In every community, there are endless opportunities to give back; whether that’s supporting a food drive, working with animals or donating time to a local organization, there’s something out there that speaks to everyone. And residents don’t have to look very far to find the perfect place to start. Seniors Serving Seniors and Society is an international award-winning volunteer program developed by Holiday Retirement. We’re proud to help our residents serve the causes they love.
Regardless of the season, there’s always a wide variety of activities and events at every Holiday Retirement community — check out our event calendar to see what’s happening in your neighborhood.
