Finding the Ideal Senior Lifestyle
Following the death of her mother, Kathie McCauley left her home in New Hampshire to live with her father. But Kathie knew this was not a long-term solution and when she returned to New Hampshire, her father came with.
“I knew I couldn’t just leave him in Florida,” she said. “So he lived with me (in New Hampshire), but my house was just too chaotic.”
Kathie started her search for alternative living arrangements in the area. But she found that most senior living communities did not match her father’s needs or were simply out of her price range.
“He didn’t need to go to a nursing home or assisted-living,” Kathie said. “He was still capable of living independently.”
A short time into her search, Kathie received a notice about Maple Suites, a new independent retirement community opening nearby. Independent retirement living is a unique lifestyle that combines the ease and security of a larger community with the freedom and comfort of a private apartment. This lifestyle is suited for seniors who are capable of living independently but seek a more carefree way of life without the hassles of home maintenance, cooking, cleaning, or even driving.
Kathie toured Maple Suites with her father but immediately assumed it was out of her price range.
“I thought it was fabulous but too rich for our blood,” she said.
However, when considering the average cost of maintaining a home with utilities, groceries, and more, she found the monthly rent at Maple Suites to be quite comparable. “We were shocked when we heard the cost, and we actually signed that day,” Kathie said.
Three years into his time at Maple Suites, Kathie’s father is very involved in many of the community activities, including bocce ball and pool. He’s also enjoying the healthy, chef-prepared meals.
“He’s a diabetic and since living there, his numbers are perfect,” Kathie said. “The meals are phenomenal. Plus, they are really good about getting to know him and what he wants. They always ask what he would like instead of just plunking it down in front of him. Maple Suites has been a dream come true for our family. We never have to worry about dad, and when we visit, everyone is very welcoming.”
Moving to a retirement community does not have to signal the end of independence for seniors. In fact, independent retirement communities, such as Holiday Retirement’s, can provide peace-of-mind for families and enhance the retirement years for seniors.
