National Senior Health & Fitness Day: Why You Should Be One of the 100,000
by Dr. Sara Kyle
May 29 marks the 26th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day®. As a big believer in the value of physical activity, Holiday Retirement is a proud participant in this event every year. Our communities offer exercise classes, health-focused activities and nutritious meals year round, but this holiday is always a great reminder to ask how we can do more — and celebrate the inspiring things happening in our lives.
Our very own Bill Henry, a resident of Holiday Retirement’s Hidden Lakes, has already inspired dozens of friends and neighbors with his quest to walk 1,000 miles in his own backyard. Bill has long been an avid walker — he’s even won a number of competitions over the past 30 years — but his latest challenge is less a formal affair and more a personal commitment.
You see, Bill was chatting with a neighbor about his exercise routine and struck by a sudden inspiration: He would turn his habit of walking around his favorite Hidden Lakes landmark, Berger Lake, into a mission to reach 1,000 miles around the lake he loves. Three turns about the lake equal one mile, so Bill challenged himself to walk one mile each morning and afternoon. 10 months into his effort, he has logged more than 600 miles — and he’s still counting!
But Bill is far from the only person staying active. The change in seasons means many communities are enjoying some of their first outdoor bean bag baseball games of the year, settling the stage for a summer full of tournaments and good times.
Those who haven’t caught the bean bag baseball bug have plenty of other options. From refreshing yoga classes, to strength training and even a round or two of Wii Bowling, there’s always something happening in our communities. It’s a standard we work hard to maintain, and we value and understand the immense benefits of healthy living for older adults. We also understand that fitness should be fun and accessible and, if you’re lucky, shared with friends and family.
If you’re looking for a community of active and supportive friends and neighbors, Holiday Retirement may be just the place for you! Stop by a community in your neighborhood to see what we have going on and get in the game.
