Quirky seniors help spread Holiday Retirement spirit all year round
Whether you're hanging stockings by the fireplace or barbecuing hot dogs at a 4th of July picnic, the holidays are wonderful opportunities to stand out and celebrate with style and personality. A handful of Holiday Retirement residents have gained quite the reputation for going the extra mile when it comes to spreading holiday cheer throughout their communities.
A celebration on wheels at Standiford Place
Al Zavala, or "Big Al," a resident of Holiday Retirement's Standiford Place, dresses his scooter up for every holiday, no matter how big or small. To prepare, Big Al makes a trek to the local dollar store to stock up on supplies, including decorations for his scooter and stuffed animals that often sing holiday tunes. Al shares the love with fellow residents, handing out the stuffed animals as gifts and spreading cheer up and down the hallways on his snappy scooter.
According to Laurie Warren, enrichment coordinator at Standiford Place, "Big Al's big heart and zest for life never fail to leave us with a smile."
The festive fashionista of Blue Water Lodge
Kathern Jurn, a resident at Holiday Retirement's Blue Water Lodge, is known for dressing "to the nines" every day with matching outfits and jewelry. It's only fitting that someone with Kathern's fashion sense also goes all out with creative holiday costumes too! One of Kathern's favorite holidays is Halloween; every year she dresses up as a witch and participates in the town's annual "Witch's Walk" parade.
"Not only are her costumes fabulous, but Kathern's spirit and attitude towards life are contagious and uplifting," says Jackie Hilgendorf, enrichment coordinator at Blue Water Lodge.
The merrymaker of Mistywood
Harold Sanford of Holiday Retirement's Mistywood may not dress up in costumes every holiday, but his nickname, the (unofficial) "Mayor of Mistywood," was earned, in part, by his tremendous party-planning skills. Harold helps with event decorating, setup and breakdown--and he even runs events at the California senior living community too. This jack-of-all trades' party specialty is making sherbet punch for his fellow residents, which has quickly become a Mistywood favorite.
Mistywood enrichment coordinator Heather Franklin describes Harold as "Mr. Terrific," noting that his event planning efforts "have made our lives that much more the richer."
