Why should seniors volunteer?
Holiday Retirement believes that individuals who make the decision to volunteer truly experience increased satisfaction, pride, and a feeling of personal accomplishment. Studies have shown that 70% of senior volunteers claim to enjoy a better quality of life than the average non-volunteering senior.
Because volunteering is so beneficial to seniors’ lives, Resident Enrichment developed the Seniors Serving Seniors/Seniors Serving Society Program. The mission statement for the Seniors Serving Seniors/Society Program is “to coordinate opportunities for senior citizens to serve other seniors as well as society, and in return, enhance purpose and passion in their lives, and enrich the lives of the individuals they serve.”
An example of Seniors Serving Seniors is our Sunshine Committee. The Sunshine Committee is comprised of a group of residents who genuinely care about people and notice if they are missing from meals or activities or may not be feeling well. The community equips the Sunshine Committee with a cart of goodies (hot cocoa packets, books, fruit, etc.), and they push their cart around to the doors of residents who may not have attended meals and/or activities to brighten their day and remind them they were missed.
An example of Seniors Serving Society is our Random Acts of Kindness outings. Random Acts of Kindness outings are focused on our executive chefs baking and plating baked goodies with our residents, and then our enrichment coordinators (and bus drivers and managers) accompany residents to deliver the baked goodies and the Holiday Touch to local community contacts such as police stations, fire stations, doctors’ offices, and universities.
Communities are encouraged to have two Seniors Serving Seniors/ Society events on a weekly basis. We also have dedicated walls to hang our residents’ photos, along with their names and titles of how the volunteer. In addition, our company has provided plaques that hold words with deep meaning—“Don’t just live with us—participate with us.” At Holiday Retirement, we want to foster and create purpose and passion in our residents’ lives.
