Ron and Zoey
Visits to local ASPCA chapters are common among Holiday Retirement communities, especially as part of the Seniors Serving Seniors and Society program during National Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month. But one group visit was an extra-meaningful experience for Pinecrest resident Ron Renfroe and earned him a new best friend: Zoey, a black and white tabby cat.
“I knew I wanted to get a cat before I even walked through the door,” Ron explains. “I just didn't know which one.” The veteran, who suffered a stroke in 2003, spent 10 years in an assisted living community that did not allow pets prior to coming to Pinecrest. “I've had dogs and cats all my life, so I knew I wanted to be a pet owner again. Holiday Retirement’s pet policy was one of the factors that helped me choose living here.”
Zoey is certainly a lucky little lady because, of all the cats at the ASPCA on that fateful day, Ron chose her as his new roommate. “There was just something about her,” he recalls. “She’s just a really friendly, nice cat.”
Ron is still confident in his decision and thinks Zoey is the perfect roommate, other than the fact that she “gets jealous” when anyone else comes over and wants all of Ron’s attention.
And, how does Zoey pay Ron in exchange for rent, you ask? “For starters, she makes sure I always have the proper amount of cat hair on my clothes,” Ron says. “There’s no outfit complete without cat hair!”
